A Young Man Decides to See His Family Doctor About His Depression and His Alcohol Problems

Larry at long last finally decided to go and see his healthcare practitioner about his unhealthy drinking.  At first, Larry thought he would be able to basically go on the Internet, look for some essential alcohol info, and decide whether or not he was an alcoholic.  Not unexpectedly, he discovered many websites that cataloged some of the general alcoholism symptoms.  That’s the positive news. The less than positive news, sadly, was that Larry showed signs of more than a few of these alcoholism symptoms.

Symptoms of Alcohol Addiction: Some Examples

For example, Larry was drinking significantly more than customary and he was beginning to have more angry quarrels with his girlfriend.  In addition, for the first time in his young life he was experiencing sleeping issues. In a similar way, Larry habitually felt depressed and on an ever increasing basis he had been manifesting less than usual attention to detail at his place of work.

Furthermore, he felt stressed out and more nervous on a day-to-day basis and for the past eight or nine months he displayed murky thinking at his place of employment.  Seeing as Larry manifested all of these symptoms, he was excusably worried about his abusive drinking.

So Larry finally decided to place a phone call to his family physician and schedule an appointment.  As it happens, this was challenging for Larry because his healthcare practitioner was also his parents’ family physician.  The root of his worry was this: at the risk of embarrassing his family, he had to go and reveal his irresponsible and abusive drinking behavior to his family doctor.

When Larry arrived at the doctor’s office, he explicitly informed the healthcare practitioner about the anxiety he felt about his irresponsible drinking behavior.  When the family doctor asked what was stimulating this apprehension, Larry said that he had gone online and read about dependency on alcohol and especially about alcohol dependency symptoms. He then listed all of the alcohol dependency symptoms that he plainly thought he manifested.

An Inclusive Physical Appraisal and Outpatient Alcohol Treatment

The family physician notified Larry that it was smart of him to focus on his problem drinking, he gave Larry an in depth physical examination, and suggested that he enroll in an out-patient alcohol rehab program that was managed by one of his doctor co-workers.

Moreover, when Larry articulated that he had been feeling depressed to an increasing degree, the family physician notified Larry that alcoholism and depression often occur in the same person.  Consequently, the doctor also suggested that Larry seek therapy to address his depression.

The Merit of Coming To Grips With Your Drinking Problems

The healthcare professional made it a point to inform Larry that he might not inevitably be dependent on alcohol, but that he was unmistakably drinking in an abusive manner.  The family doctor then told Larry that the reason he recommended alcohol rehab in the first place was because he wanted him to face his drinking issues, make sure that he stopped them from intensifying, and start to live in a more healthy manner, even if it meant that he had to completely refrain from drinking.

When all’s said and done, by effectively treating his problem drinking, Larry would be able to get his drinking difficulties under control and abstain from the negative cycle that could in all probability lead to alcohol addiction.

Obviously, Larry did not want to face the thought of getting admitted into an alcohol treatment facility. Nor was he elated about going to a counselor about his melancholy.  Regardless of these trepidations, however, Larry in actual fact felt some emotional relief for the first time in numerous months because at last he stopped making excuses for himself and at long last made up his mind to do something productive about his drinking activities.
