Atkins Diet VS Diabetes

Written by ama on Tuesday, August 24th, 2010 in Atkins Diet.

Studies have shown that low-carbohydrate eating has many benefits. There have been scientific results that low-carbohydrate diets like Atkins do create significant weight loss without having to restrict calories. People who use the Atkins diet have also reported this. There are studies that show that low-carb eating improves triclycerides, reduces blood glucose for diabetics and pre-diabetics and increases good cholesterol (HDL). Low-carbohydrate dieting has been scientifically proven to improve insulin sensitivity, decrease blood pressure and lower blood insulin levels. When compared with low-fat diets, low-carb dieters lose less muscle mass.

However, there are also some benefits that are specific to the Atkins diet. If you have been a low fat dieter in previous years, you’ll enjoy eating all of those “forbidden foods” that you once had to go without. Steak, butter and cream are a regular part of Atkins dieters’ meals. There is a certain pleasure that goes along with eating foods that were once off limits. Atkins dieters are encouraged to eat their full of rich meats, cheeses and fats and oils.Atkins is also simple to use, compared with some other low-carb diets on the market. There are some basic food carbohydrate counts that you’ll need to learn, but after that, you are free to eat from the acceptable food lists.

The popularity of Atkins is a double-edged sword for dieters. There is a lot of information available on the diet, which makes it easy to find resources and support. There have been many, many Atkins books written and there are endless amounts of websites that offer tips and group support. However, everyone has heard of Atkins and probably has an opinion on it. There are some big misconceptions out there about the nature of the diet, and you’ll no doubt have to defend your new way of eating from time to time. Discover lose fat thigh.

There are some other minimal downsides to using the Atkins program. You do need to count carbohydrates in everything you eat to make sure that you are staying within your personal carbohydrate range. There is also the issue of Induction, the most hotly debate aspect of the plan. Induction can be difficult to get through if you’ve had a diet that centers on carbs and sugar. Also, many people try Induction and mistakenly believe that this is the way that the whole diet is going to be. They end up quitting before they get into the actual Atkins plan.

Atkins diet foods are easy to find and available everywhere. There are many varieties to choose from, whether you pick prepackaged low-carb diet foods or make your own meals. No matter how you want to do the Atkins plan, there is a solution out there for you.

The third tier is made up of berries and avocado. Fruits should be used on an occasional basis after the initial stages of the Atkins diet. Vegetable and seed oils, cheese, dairy, nuts and legumes are used sparingly and in appropriate portions. While the FDA pyramid has oils and fats at the top peak, the Atkins pyramid places whole grain foods in this spot. Whole grain foods should be used very occasionally and don’t make up the mainstay of the Atkins diet.Browse this content on how to lose fat thighs.

You owe it to your dieting success to stay within the acceptable foods list. One of the best ways to do this is to follow the Atkins menu plans that are printed within the New Diet Revolution book. There are also Atkins cookbooks and cookbooks that are geared toward other low carb diets that are helpful in formulating meal plans.

Atkins diet food is easy to find once you know what you are looking for. The books, food pyramid and online resources can help you make better food choices and stay on the diet for the long term. The Atkins diet is not a new phenomenon. The diet first appeared in the late 1970s and has grown popularity in recent years in response to the low-fat diet craze. As dieters had trouble with low-fat plans, they searched for a new solution and Dr. Atkins’ New Diet Revolution book found a new audience.

The Atkins diet is based on a theory of why we get fat. According to Dr. Atkins, the over-consumption of carbohydrates and simple sugars leads to weight gain. The way your body processes the carbohydrates you eat have more to do with your waistline than the amount of fat or calories that you consume. In his book, Atkins outlines a phenomenon called “insulin resistance.” He theorizes that many overweight people have cells that do not work correctly.

When you eat excess carbohydrates and sugar, your body notices that sugar levels are elevated. Insulin is released from the pancreas in order to store sugar as glycogen in the liver and muscle cells for extra energy later on. However, your body can only store so much glycogen at once. As soon as your body reaches its limit for glycogen storage, the excess carbohydrates are stored as fat. This happens to everyone who eats too many carbohydrates.

The remedy for people who are insulin resistant is a diet restricted in carbohydrates. The crux of the Atkins diet is a limitation of carbohydrates in all of its forms. The foods restricted on the Atkins plan include simple sugars (like cookies, sodas and sweets) and complex carbohydrates (like bread, rice and grains). Even carbohydrates that are considered healthy, such as oatmeal, brown rice and whole wheat bread, are restricted on the program. Dont miss this article about lose fat thigh here.

The diet has you restrict your carbohydrate intake to less than 40 grams a day. This will put your body in a state of ketosis. While in ketosis, your body will burn fat as fuel. According to Dr. Atkins’ research, the ketosis state will also affect insulin production and it will prevent more fat from being formed. Your body will begin using your stored fat as an efficient form of fuel, and you’ll lose weight.

The basic principles of the Atkins diet have been adapted to many other low-carb diet plans. However, Atkins popularity still remains strong as one of the most effective low-carbohydrate solutions for those who are insulin resistant.

Another popular Atkins criticism is that it focuses too much on food and not enough on exercise. This is an unfair claim because the Atkins books clearly spell out a need for exercise. There is a lot of attention paid to food choices because they are an integral part of the program, and they are different foods than what people are normally used to eating. However, this does not mean that exercise is not an integral part of the Atkins program. Aerobic and anaerobic exercise regimens are encouraged, and both will greatly increase your weight loss efforts.

There are pros and cons to many diets. If you don’t particularly enjoy preparing and eating meat, then Atkins is probably not for you. But if you are considering Atkins, make sure to look beyond the common criticisms for the truth about the diet.

You likewise need to have small snacks after every meal to avoid hypoglycemia and keep your blood sugar level in a satisfactory level.

Symptoms of diabetes

Always bear in mind that diabetes cannot be cured. But, with proper management, you will be able to have complete control on top. By having a correct weight, you will see that it will go quite some distance in making the disease manageable. If you are overweight, you should talk to your doctor about healthy weight loss diets for people with diabetes. Crash diets in diabetics are not only unhealthy but potentially fatal.

You may wish to remember that diabetes is one of the leading reasons for blindness. Diabetic retinopathy is a complication of diabetes, which impacts the blood vessels in the retina. You may like to get your eyes checked regularly as a way to detect early indications of diabetic retinopathy. Also, stay on your medicine as a way for you to avoid or lessen the risk of getting diabetic retinopathy.

First symptoms of diabetes

If you have type 1 diabetes or are insulin dependent, always have insulin injections with you constantly. Even if you are only going later on to buy something from a depot, you should never leave without your insulin injections. As well as that, you should try showing your friends and relations how to inject it to you when your body gets not able to do it yourself. When you travel, always have spare supplies of insulin injections with you.

If it is achievable, wear a medic alert bracelet that states that you are diabetic. This can really save your life in case you are involved in an accident or you endure diabetic coma while you are traveling.

These are some of the points that you ought to do if you are diabetic. With these tips, you can be sure that you will be able to make your lifestyle easier and really help you conquer diabetes.

To thousands of parents around the globe the boss of a child with diabetes , a sound night’s sleep is something they’ve long forgotten to even imagine workable. Children with diabetes can through the night, have their blood sugar levels fall so low as to place their lives in danger, all while their parents catch up on little sleep. Dutiful parents have no choice but to keep constant vigil turn by turn during the night time, to make certain the child wakes up alright each day. There is however new hope. We have a new device now made achievable by the invention of a new computer programming algorithm. A device programmed with the algorithm has the capacity to measure a child’s blood glucose levels during the night time, and exercise control over an attached insulin administration pump to rectify any imbalances. The Lancet, the British medical research magazine, has just reported on this progress, and predicts that medical device manufacturers will quickly take this up on its promise.

What people had before, for children with juvenile diabetes (or Type I diabetes),  was a blood glucose level monitor that did a constant monitoring job all night, and the second device, an automatic insulin administration pump that worked independently of the first. Juvenile diabetes is something children get shortly after being born. Children need such a complex arrangement, because low blood glucose levels, or hypoglycemia, can send a child into tremors, seizures, and potentially, even a coma, or death. And yet, children, in addition their very bodies work, have their blood glucose levels vary so widely, that a simple automated pump, can never do a good job.

In an experiment, a group of children was placed on this device, and another, on the standard treatment. Several children on the standard treatment sounded the alarm for dangerously low blood glucose levels that the system was unable to catch in time. There are about 500, 000 people in America with Type I diabetes, who use some variation of the standard insulin administration  setup. One old process of blood glucose detection, involved using a device that actually sampled blood from a pin prick on the skin, a number of times a day. But  new technologies measure blood glucose levels with sensors attached to the skin.

What happens if you use such a sensor along with an automatic insulin administration pump, is this: if the blood sugar levels fall, the device sounds the alarm. If the child fails to wake up to such a warm, the pump will keep sending insulin into the blood to metabolize the non-existent sugar. This gets a very dangerous condition. The new system places both devices in one package, working together, that can measure blood glucose levels properly, and then decide whether to continue with insulin administration. Johnson & Johnson, and the Artificial Pancreas Project, are working together to bring such a product to the market, in a cell-phone sized device.

It might seem to some degree mysterious why this has not been doable before;  but monitoring blood glucose levels reliably, and preparing insulin administration instantly, is it no small matter. Chip technology and computer programming technology needed to progress sufficiently before this could happen.

Fitness And Diabetes

I have to say that from personal experience when I was told I had diabetes at the very young age of 12 I thought that it was going to be the end of the world but the truth is it really wasnt, an infection had. In most cases type 1 comes from someone in the family having the disease but not in this case, it came out of nowhere.

So you can imagine why that at this age I thought it was the end of the world? The worst thing about this was that I had no idea what Diabetes was and to be honest I don’t think I would today if I didn’t have the disease, I almost slipped into a coma because the doctor didn’t know what was wrong. The thing is, it took a good few months of me getting used to having it before I was told I could get back to doing some sports again. A lot of diabetics will get to this stage and think great but never really start to exercise again and this could be for any reason at all.

Doesn’t exercising make the blood sugars fall drastically? Well of course it does if you do not know how to handle it. To make sure that you do not fall into a Hypo I would simply do what I do and take a couple of glucose tablets before you exercise. Another option is to have something to eat before you go out and play a sport, I used to have a sandwich beforehand.

dehumidifier as well as an air purifier and ceiling fan have all proved to help with the condition of the air in a room, while not benefitting diabetics directly they do help to rid the air of all the nasty things that a diabetic could ca

Working Harder To Stay In Shape

Written by ama on Monday, March 29th, 2010 in Health.

Seems like the older we get, the more illnesses we have to worry about. We used to laugh when our parents called their recitation of problems ‘the organ recital, ‘ but that’s what it seems like for us younger folk today as well.

At least our athletic friend has a somewhat lesser problem to manage that our brother-in-law. A few months back he was diagnosed with the form of diabetes called Type 2, which often affects older people. It means that his body has become resistant to the effects of insulin, which regulates blood sugar. Consequently he’s had to start taking extra insulin to compensate for this change, and things aren’t going very well with getting the dosage accurate. He read recently that some patients with Type 2 diabetes have begun to take a supplement made from an extract of the agaricus brazil mushroom. It seems this extract has the ability to increase the body’s acceptance of insulin when taken along with it, so that the dosage can be stabilized.

That brings us back to our friend the ice hockey player. Since his joints bother him when he plays, he’s been looking around for something to help.

One remedy that seems to help a lot of people with their joints is kirkland glucosamine. Apparently this supplement helps to provide support for the cartilage around the joints, which tends to get thinner as we age. By giving more support to the cartilage that cushions our joints, the joints themselves hold up better and move more freely.

Our sister-in-law has trouble with osteoarthritis in her hands. It’s very frustrating for her to have her hands achy and swollen because of her hobby. Whenever the arthritis in her hands flares up, she tries a new round of arthritis remedies, looking for relief. She crochets all kinds of lovely baby blankets and little caps for newborns. A local charity gives her creations, and those of many other generous women, to the public hospital where many low-income mothers have their babies.

Perhaps that’s the biggest change we have to make with growing older: becoming patient with ourselves and the ways our bodies work now. If we give ourselves as much support as we can muster, then maybe things won’t be so hard.

The best options we’ve found so far for age-related problems is simply to pay more attention to the basics of good health: eat right, watch your weight, exercise regularly and keep the mind active. Some people have these principles down pat, but some of us find we’re having to do ‘corrective’ practices as we get older. Even a daily walk for 30 minutes or more can help - as long as we don’t top it off with an ice cream sundae!

HIGH BLOOD SUGAR IS AN INDICATION OF A MORE SERIOUS PROBLEM

POPULAR UNDERSTANDING:

Diabetics do not make enough insulin or the body does not use all the insulin it produces. Insulin is a hormone that assists the production of glucose (sugar) to be absorbed into cells and then converted to energy. The pancreas emits enzymes that aid carbohydrate, protein, and fat metabolism. When the pancreas is dysfunctional then digestive enzymes are not provided for digestion. The condition imbalances the liver, gall bladder, spleen and all digestive related organs. During uncontrolled diabetes, glucose and fats stay in the circulatory system, where in time, the principal digestive organs become damaged and finally diseased.

DIABETIC STATISTICS:

  • Seventeen million Americans are walking around with diabetes, and 200,000 people will die this year due to related complications. Diabetes sets up conditions for heart disease, stroke, blindness, kidney failure, leg and foot amputations, pregnancy complications, and deaths related to flu and pneumonia. At risk, are the 5.9 million Americans who are unaware that they have the condition.
  • We spend $100 Billion a year on diabetes, directly and indirectly. In 1997, the average health care cost for a person with diabetes was ,071, compared with ,699 for a person without diabetes.
  • U.S. adults with diabetes increased 49% from 1990 to 2000. Beyond the next decade, diabetes is expected to grow.
  • Diabetes is an epidemic. In 1990, there were only 4 U.S. states determined to be at epidemic levels. In 1995, the amount raised to 11. In 2000, there were only 6 states that were not at epidemic levels.

What happened to the other 44 states in 10 years? What is occuring in our country where a disease can over run us. We are being secretly invaded by a force greater than any terrorist group. Is there anyone seeing what is truely happening? That’s more than 15 million plus people caught in the grips of this top level threat to our country. Where’s the equal level response by our government and medical establishment?

UNDERLYING CAUSATION

While insulin production and all the relevant symptoms in the body is a concern, to rest here and just declare the pancreas is the source of the ailment is not enough. Its a primary component but not the complete. Some other factors:

Diet & Elimination: While diet plays another primary role in the story, reducing protein, carbs and sugar, soundly, helps but there is more to the setting that needs to be acknowledged. The quality of our food is less nutritious. Our U.S. sources have exhausted the top soil quality. Rather than re-establishing our soil with our elimination similar to other long life zones, the U.S. wastes its valuable elimination down the sewers to the rivers and eventually the oceans. As a result we have to look to natural sources of foods and diabetic herbs.

Life stressors: Stress wears down the life force. Are we experiencing more stress than our parents? Hard to say. They experienced World War II while we have been presented ever increasing unlabelled wars, entertainment channels, manmade diseases, taxes, etc. If, we try to measure up to these activities and not rest (physically, mentally, spiritually) then our adrenals-kidneys become deficient which houses our physical energy production. The result is that all of our organs do not have the energy to sustain. Subsequently, body organs do not do their jobs and need to be restored not individually but systemically before further non-understood ailments surface.

Character: Our ability to interpret, positively or negatively, may have a lot to say about our ability to manage personal conflict. If we see things positively then our perceptions and response is that we are challenged and figure out solutions. When negative, then opportunities will be missed because we are strapped by fear. That high level of anxiety speeds up aging, perpetuates fear and opens the door to an unprotected immunity. We need to learn or relearn how find courage during stressful times. As we believe, we perceive, so shall our life follow.

You can use a diabetes control diet for once you have already developed the disease, but did you know that you can go on a pre diabetes diet which is going to help prevent you from developing the disease in the first place? If you know that diabetes is a condition that runs in your family, then you know that you are much more likely to develop the disease as well.

Now if you want to go on a pre diabetes diet which would be a very smart move especially if there are quite a few people that you know in your family who already have diabetesthemselves, there are a few things that you are going to want to keep in mind when it comes to creating your pre diabetes diet.

What is Pre Diabetes Diet?

Pre diabetes is basically a condition that doctors consider when people have higher than normal blood sugar levels so when they are pretty much on their way to having diabetes but not yet. This is why getting on a diabetes diet plan is so important, and especially pre diabetes diet is going to be so important to you here.

You need to know that for this diet you are going to have to set goals for fat and calorie consumption which means that you figure out what you weigh and then work with this to figure out how many calories a day you should be consuming. If you weigh between 120 and 170 pounds you need to be eating 33 grams of fat and 1,200 calories a day and if you weigh between 175 and 215 pounds you need to be consuming between 42 grams of fat and 1,500 calories per day.

Now if you weigh between 220 and 245 pounds you need to consumer between 50 grams of fat and 1,800 calories a day and for people who weigh between 250 pounds or more then you need to be consuming between 55 grams of fat and 2,000 calories per day.

Remember that there are certain foods that you are going to want to make sure that you are eating on your pre diabetes diet. Legumes for instance are a great source of protein and are important to include in your diet if you want to avoid getting diabetes. Fresh fruits are also very important to include in your diet just make sure that you eat them regularly but not too often because they will increase your blood sugar levels.

Below, the top seven diabetic problems are listed.

THE TOP 7

1. EYE PROBLEMS & BLINDNESS: Each year, 12,000-24,000 people become blind because of diabetic eye disease.

2. KIDNEY PROBLEMS: Kidney problems. About 38,000 people with diabetes develop kidney failure each year, and over 100,000 are treated for this condition.

3. AMPUTATIONS: About 82,000 people have diabetes-related leg and foot amputations each year.

4. HEART PROBLEMS: Heart problems. Heart disease and stroke cause about 65% of deaths among people with diabetes.

5. PREGNANCY COMPLICATIONS: About 18,000 women with preexisting diabetes deliver babies each year, and an estimated 135,000 expectant mothers are diagnosed with gestational diabetes. Specific women and their children have a serious vulnerability to further complications.

6. FLU & PNEUMONIA (related deaths): Each year, 10,000-30,000 people with diabetes die of complications from flu or pneumonia. They are roughly three times more likely to die of these complications than people without diabetes.

7. SKIN PROBLEMS: No one knows how many people suffer from skin inflammation (neuropathy, neuritis) or are pre-diabetic. Skin problems based on this condition rob the body’s ability to clear toxins, maintain immunity and/or protect itself from outside infections.

My mentor, who had to save himself from Diabetes found these formulas to be very beneficial which also prevented amputation of his legs. Through trial and error, it took 10 years to figure out the right formula for himself. For Diabetes, this combination of Chinese herbs, in well tested formulas, work:

The Importance Of Blood Glucose Normal Levels

Written by ama on Thursday, June 18th, 2009 in Atkins Diet.

The concentration of glucose in blood is the blood glucose level; it can be measured and needs to be kept in the normal range. The normal level of blood glucose is in the range of 4 to 6mmol/L. Maintaining this level is extremely important as very high or very low levels may cause some other health issues and diseases and in extreme cases may even lead to severe complications. Whether you are diabetic or a non-diabetic the doctors may advice you to maintain certain blood glucose levels considered normal which would be safe for you.

Blood Glucose Normal Levels

The glucose levels are lower in the morning before your first meals. But they would usually be within a range of 80mg/dL to 150mg/dLi.e. 3.9 to 8.3mmol/L. Temporarily the level may go up to 150mg/dL after your meal. This is the sign of low blood sugar or hypoglycemia if you have chronic blood glucose levels below 70mg/dL. Similarly, if your levels go beyond 150 it is indicative of hyperglycemia or high blood sugar. It might not be diabetes every time but you should consult the doctors to confirm the results. It can cause damage to your body if you have very high or very low levels of blood glucose. While high level may cause nerve damage, kidney damage, low blood glucose levels may cause impairment of mental functions and even loss of consciousness. Thus the importance of keeping your blood glucose within normal levels has to be well understood.

Blood glucose test and their normal ranges

There are different types of tests that can be conducted to find out if the blood glucose normal levels have been maintained. Normally each test has a normal range. It may vary a bit from one lab test to another test.

The fasting blood glucose test is taken 8 hours after you have eaten anything. You fast for this period without taking any food or liquids just water. The blood glucose normal level for this test is less than 110mg/dL. If the measurement is more than 126mg/dL after two consecutive blood tests it may be an indicatior of diabetes.
Postprandial test:The test is conducted 2 hours after food. The normal level is below 120mg/dL . Often the level goes below 100mg/dL or 5. 5 among non diabetics after two hours.
Random blood glucose test: This random test as the name suggest is taken at any time and not necessarily after a meal or snack. The normal range for this should not be higher than 200mg/dL or 11.1mmol/L.
Oral glucose tolerance test: This oral test is conducted to measure your body’s response to sugar. The test involves measuring your fasting blood sugar first and then drinking a sugary solution. The glucose level is measured again after two hours. For this test the level is also less than 140mg/dL or 7.That is 8mmol/L.
Glycated hemoglobin is a useful test to measure you control on diabetes over a period of time. This is reflection of your average blood sugar for the last three to five weeks. It shows what percentage of your hemoglobin is sugar coated. The normal levels are 4 to 6 percent in non diabetes and lower than 7 percent amongst diabetics. During pregnancy it must be lower than 6 percent.

Parents should take care of their children for normal blood glucose levels so that they do not have to suffer from the ill effects of high or low blood glucose levels. For do not have to face the complications as a result of the high or low levels diabetics as well as normal people should ensure that they maintain their blood glucose levels in the normal range.

Type 2 Diabetes Diet Health Supplements

Written by ama on Thursday, June 18th, 2009 in Health.

Diabetes has been spreading like an epidemic in America and most European countries. This fatal disease has no medication but can be well controlled with the proper diet and good eating habits. Except a balanced diet, today there are several dietary supplements available in the market that helps to cut out diabetes. Supplements of these type has been found beneficial in fighting this terrible disease and can be easily taken. The dietary supplements are known for giving more nutrients to your body and are therefore very useful in fighting diabetes and other diseases.

There is not much evidence to prove the benefits of dietary supplements but current ongoing research has shown encouraging results. If the food or diet you chose is not providing you enough nutrients then the supplements can be helpful. Health supplements like these have also vitamins, minerals and other essential nutrients. Our body’s response towards insulin can be increased by the supplement vanadium. Chromium can help in controlling blood sugar levels. Magnesium helps manage the diabetes because diabetic people are known to have low magnesium.

Dietary supplements should not be the only thing one should depend on. A person suffering from diabetes needs to follow a  balanced diabetic diet that aims to control the blood sugar levels. The supplements should be taken only if the diet proves insufficient or under particular situation. These health supplements are full of vitamins and essential minerals and nutrients but you should not take them without doctor’s consultation. These supplements are best taken under medical guidance. Improper use of health supplements can prove fatal and hence care should be taken.

Combining health supplements along with medicines requires a doctor’s approval. Often a combination of few supplements and medicines can cause severe damage to your body. When suffering any other health problem, it is best to let your doctor know about the medicines being taken. By having healthy and balanced diet limiting your diabetes is the best idea. No specific food has been defined as the diabetes food. All types of foods provide a good health if eaten in balanced amount.

In your healthy diabetic diet include fresh vegetables and fruits. Include complex carbohydrates and unsaturated fats in the diabetic diet plan. Trash and fried foods should always be avoided. Food items which are baked or low fried is always better than a deep fried food item.Your diabetic food need not be boring and tasteless. You can certainly cook healthy yet relishing food. A bowl full of whole grain pasta or brown cooked rice is healthy enough and can be a part of diabetic diet. Fish, eggs, skimmed milk, yoghurt, sour cream, nuts, beans, vegetables, and fruits, lean meats are also proved to be healthy and must be a part of diabetic diets.

Consulting a doctor or an experienced dietitian will help you plan healthy meals. Good knowledge of various food groups can help you draft your own diet to meet your body’s requirements. Diabetes diet health supplements can prove useful to fight diabetes; however, there is no guarantee of the same.
