Whether you’re a patient or a visitor to a hospital, you need appropriate seating. Infection control is a key consideration but so too is the seating itself – ask yourself if it can it be used by someone of a larger size. It is for this reason that you need to cater for both the visitor as well as the hospital patient.
It may be that you have a different style of chair for visitors and a set style for patients. The patient chairs you are likely to find in hospital bedrooms are going to follow a similar style, which will mean it will be high-backed and very supportive for optimum comfort. It is also possible to find hospital chairs that have neck supports, offering greater comfort when patients need it most.
The hospital visitors often get the use of smaller chair when they come to visit someone they know. These are often quite light because they are designed to be easily moveable and sometimes stacked in another area of the hospital ready for appropriate use. You won’t expect to find beautifully upholstered hospital chairs though – the visitor chairs might even be plastic which allows for easy cleaning.
In a hospital, infection control is of paramount importance and hospitals are trying to take every minute detail into consideration. If stains appear on a hospital chair then it is essential that they can be removed quickly and conveniently, so the chairs you choose are of course important.
Hospital chairs are essential for both the patient and visitor needs, but both might require different furniture styles. In the hospital reception area, for example, you would expect to see furniture that is all the same and this is indeed usually the case. You wont see sofas or big comfy armchairs in a hospital though, as these wouldn’t meet the hospital standards and would be a nightmare to clean! In the patients rooms the main focus is on support and comfort and therefore it is no surprise that hospital chairs are chosen based on this merit. Another important aspect to bear in mind is that chairs shouldn’t be uncomfortable for visitors, even though many hospitals make it known that they don’t really like visitors hanging around for too long.
