Body changes are considered normal so long as they make the body organs more efficient in doing their functions. But when these changes bring with them pain and other abnormalities which can harm than do good, they are probably symptoms of a particular disease. If you have irregular menstrual periods for months now, you have hair growing excessively, or you have a high cholesterol level despite the balanced diet, you can be experiencing an abnormality that is related to your ovaries’ functions.
If you indeed experience the foregoing symptoms, most probably you have PCOS syndrome. PCOS syndrome (Polycystic ovarian syndrome) is that hormonal complication in women that carry with it different symptoms besides the ones mentioned. The other symptoms are obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, acne, and others.
You cannot find some medical explanation for the causes of the PCOS syndrome. It has been observed that women with PCOS syndrome often have relatives like a mother or sister who experience the same syndrome. It is not however scientifically proven that PCOS syndrome can be inherited. Another probable cause is the presence of small cysts inside the ovary and there are also women who have cysts but don’t suffer the PCOS syndrome. An abnormality in insulin production is commonly observed in women with the PCOS syndrome but this can only be a result of the excessive production of androgen in the human body.
PCOS Syndrome is often diagnosed by doctors after having seen the above mentioned symptoms. Since these symptoms are also symptoms of other illnesses, physicians advise their patients to have physical examination which includes ultrasound, computed tomography, and also magnetic reasoning. Ultrasound imaging is also commonly used since it does not make use of radiation thus it is safer for women who may be pregnant or not. The MRI and CT Scan are the costly yet efficient medical procedures. CT Scan can be a health hazard since it makes use of x-rays and also injected dyes.
You should know that the PCOS Syndrome is treatable. The treatments vary according to the age of women. Women who want to have birth control are prescribed with birth control pills, but those who don’t are given treatments that would allow them to have regular menstrual flow each month. The substance clomiphene is prescribed to women who suffer from infertility to trigger their ovulation. When these treatment methods don’t result positively, ovarian drilling may be required to stop the symptoms of PCOS syndrome.
